Physical Appearance: Two handwritten copies of:
a) May 16, 1864 - Headquarters Valley District, New Market [Virginia] - J. Stoddard Johnston to Lieut[enant] Col[onel] S[cott] T. Shipp, commanding Corps of Cadets - Under direction of Major General John C. Breckinridge, sends thanks to the [Virginia Military Institute] Corps of Cadets for their services at the Battle of New Market. (Signed) J. Stoddard Johnston, Maj[or] & Adj[utan]t. A note at the bottom reads, "A Copy / J. Stoddard Johnston / Sept 22nd 1896."
b) Same letter as above, written on smaller paper and glued to pressboard. Header information at the top reads, "Reproduction of original letter conveying the thanks of Major General John C. Breckinridge to the Corps of Cadets of the Virginia Military Institute for their gallantry at the battle of New Market, Va., May 15, 1864." Date copied at the bottom, December 16, 1900 at Louisville, Kentucky.
