Physical Appearance: Two letters concerning a pair of gloves: a) April 2, 1864 - [1st Lieutenant] Henry Fry at Camp, 37th Reg[imen]t V[irgini]a Inf[an]t[r]y, to Brig[adie]r Gen[era]l George H[ume] Steuart, Com[man]d[in]g 3rd Brig[ade] - Encloses a pair of gloves sent by "ladies of from the Backwoods of dear Old Virginia." Signed, "Henry Fry" 1 page. Marks: "F-11-1" near top margin. <<>> Marks: "Metal Case 3 F 39" at upper left corner. A red CMLS seal is embossed at lower right corner. b) April 2, 1864 - [Brigadier General George Hume Steuart] at H[ea]d Q[uarte]rs Steuart's Brigade, to [1st] Lieut[enant] Henry Fry, [Company C] 37th V[irgini]a Reg[imen]t - A thank-you note for the gloves sent in (a). Unsigned. 1 page. Marks: "Metal Case 3 S 84" at top edge. A stain from a rusty paper clip is near the upper left edge. <<>> A red CMLS seal is embossed at the lower right corner.
Archival History The two letters between Brig. Gen. Steuart and 1st Lt. Henry Fry were formerly located in the MC 3 F-377 files. 1st Lt. Fry's letter is listed in Douglas S. Freeman's "Calendar of Confederate Papers," number F-11-1, on page 255. Brig. Gen. Steuart's thank you note is listed in Freeman's "Calendar," number F-11-2, on page 405.
