Physical Appearance: May 3, 1865 - Handwritten copy of an "official copy" letter from Lieutenant General Richard Taylor at Headquarters Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana, Meridian, Mississippi, to Major General Dabney Herndon Maury, Com[man]d[in]g - Acknowledges receipt of communication from Maury concerning letter dated May 2 [see 1939.012.00018]. Directs Maury on what explanation to give his troops for the inevitable surrender to Federal troops. (Signed) R.Taylor, Lieutenant General.

Archival History The negative photostat letter was formerly located in the MC 3 M-647a files. According to the donor, the handwriting of the original is in 1st Lt. William T. Mumford's hand.
