Archival History This commission was formerly located in the MC 3 C-190 files. The Robert Hall Chilton Collection contains correspondence and ephemera of Robert Hall Chilton (1815-1879), held in the Eleanor S. Brockenbrough Library. The collection includes Chilton's 1864 appointment as brigadier and list of the officers and men taking parole at Greensboro, North Carolina, on April 29, 1865. Among the extensive postwar holdings are letters to former generals Richard Stoddert Ewell, Daniel Harvey Hill, and James Longstreet, as well as handwritten notes on campaigns--including Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. Wartime items found in other collections consist of offical correspondence to Chilton from General T. J. Jackson and General J. E. B. Stuart. The Robert E. Lee Family Collection contains many personal postwar letters from General Lee to the Chilton family, and likewise, the Davis Family Collection has several postwar letters from Jefferson Davis to Chilton himself. Most of the Chilton items came to the Museum from Chilton's daughter, Laura Chilton Wise.
