Physical Appearance: December 13, 1903 - [William Henry Fitzhugh Payne] at Washington, D. C. to Joseph R. Anderson, [Jr.], President, Alumni Ass[ociatio]n, V[irgini]a Military Institute, Lee, Virginia - A lengthy letter containing numerous mark-throughs, corrections, and additions. Payne provides a sketch of his student days at VMI, as well as his Confederate service and includes his times as a POW. He describes being held prisoner in D. C. after Lincoln's assassination. "Wm. H. Payne[,] Late Brig[adier] Gen[eral] of the Second Division of Confederate Cav[alry] Stuart & Fitz Lee's &c." This is a photocopy of the original letter sent by Payne to Anderson. [The original remains in the Archives Dept. of Preston Library, Virginia Military Institute, Lexington, Virginia. (TR-970325.4) is a draft of this letter.]
