Scope & Content General Joseph E. Johnston to General Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard, March 23, 1865

Physical Appearance: March 23, 1865 - General Joseph Eggleston Johnston near Smithfield, [North Carolina], to General Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard - Advises that Sherman's whole army was entrenched at his front by morning of March 20th. Adds that he did not attack but held his position to cover removal of wounded and occupy enemy. Notes heavy skirmishing on March 20th & 21st, where enemy repulsed each time. Thinks the Army of Tennessee has totally disproven slanderous remarks made about it. Concludes with Union army's removal to Goldsboro during night of March 21st and Johnston's move to Smithfield on March 22nd. (Signed) J. E. Johnston. "No. 7" at upper left corner, page 1.
