Scope & Content Pencil drawing/sketch titled "Military Prison Hospital, C.S.A. Maj. J. Wilkins, Surgeon in Charge". Designed and executed by J.A. Shaffer.

Picture depicts two angles at the top, flanking a shield with "C.S.A" at the top. Above the shield, in an arch is "Military Prison" in capital letters. The angles are holding a banner below the shield which reads "Hospital" in the center and "Maj. J. Wilkins" on the left and "Surgeon in Charge" on right. In the center of the picture is a scene of the interior of a room, thought to be Chimborazo Hospital, which has an open central isle and beds with occupants are between pillars on each side. Four two-armed gasoliers are suspended from the ceiling, and three people are seen in the center - one reading a book, one carrying a tray, and one walking on crutches and missing his foot. "An Interior View" is at the bottom on the scene. The scene is surrounded by a scalloped oval border with an open book which reads "Independence" at the top. Three 2nd Confederate National flags on flag staffs flank the upper portion of the oval with an encampment with knapsack, bugle, drum, and stacked rifles in the foreground on the right side with "Capt. S. B. Simmons / Ass's / Surgeon" written below. The left side shows ramparts, two cannon tubes, pile of cannonballs, and cannon brush with "Capt. E.T. Sabal / Ass't / Surgeon" written below. Along the bottom of the page is a wide banner with decorative knots on the ends and the Virginia State Seal in the center of an Amazon standing atop a tyrant with "Virginia" above and "Sic Semper Tyranis" in an arch below on a decorative field. "Designed and executed by J.A. Shaffer" is written in the left corner below the bottom banner, and "Presented to Capt. E.T. Sabal" written below the right banner. On each side of the picture is a wire trellis entwined with a grape vine and a 2nd Confederate National flag on a flagstaff with the flag wrapped around the trellis.
