Physical Appearance: December 21, 1861 - Thomas Jonathan Jackson at Head Quarters, Valley District, Winchester, Virginia, to Major Thomas G. Rhett, Assistant Adjutant General, Head Quarters Department of Northern Virginia - Reports the arrival of part of the Army of the North West. Expects Brigadier W. W. Loring's arrival on Tuesday. Requests that Loring's command be of the forces he brings with him and that it be designated as the 1st Division, Army of the Valley. Desires to know the Commanding General's decision. Signed, "T. J. Jackson" Maj[or] Gen[era]l, Com[man]d[in]g Val[ey] Dist[rict]. 1 page. [See "Official Records," V, p. 1003.] <<>> Endorsement: December 23, 1861 - H[ea]d Q[uarte]rs, Centreville, [Virginia] - Directs that Loring's command designation will depend upon its strength and advises Jackson to say nothing.
