Physical Appearance: This folder of the William Booth Taliaferro Papers contains the following correspondence from 1863:

a) January 1, 1863 - W[illia]m B[ooth] Taliaferro,, Br[igadier] Gen[eral] com[man]d[in]g, at Head Quarters Jackson's Div[ision], to Honorable James A. Seddon, Sec[retar]y of War, recommendation of Maj[or] H. P. Jones for promotion to Chief of Artillery in Jackson's Division.

b) January 7, 1863 - W[illia]m B[ooth] Taliaferro, Brig[adier] Gen[era]l, com[man]d[in]g Division, at Head Quarters Jackson's Division, Camp near Morse Neck, [Virginia] to Honorable James A. Seddon, Sec[retar]y of War, recommends Lt. J[ames] M. Garnett for promotion to Captain and Chief of Ordnance.

c) January 9, 1863 - J[ohn] R[obert] Jones, Brig[adier] Gen[eral] at H[ea]d Q[uarte]rs Jones' Brigade, to Capt[ain Warner Throckmorton] Taliaferro, A[ssistant] A[djutant] G[eneral], responds that Quartermaster is not present and cannot answer questions, forage needs to be procured, cannot supply increased demands, needs more transportation.

d) January 11, 1863 - W[illia]m B[ooth] Taliaferro, Brig[adier] Gen[era]l, com[man]d[in]g Division, at He[a]d Quarters, Jackson's Division, to L[ieutenan]t Col[onel] [James L.] Corley, requesting direction on estimating damage to private citizens' property done by soldiers cutting wood for fuel, etc.

e) January 15, 1863 - [William Booth Taliaferro] at Head Quarters, Jackson's Division, to Maj[or] A[lexander] S[wift] Pendleton, A[ssistant] A[djutant] G[eneral] concerning papers returned for endorsement and query on Circular dated January 6, 1863.

f) January 16, 1863 - Officers of Jackson's Division, 2nd Corps, A[rmy of] N[orthern] V[irgini]a at Camp of Jackson's Division near Port Royal, V[irgini]a to [Brigadier] Gen[eral] [William Booth] Taliaferro, "The undersigned officers of Jackson Division…desire to concur is some testimonial expressive of their appreciation of your qualities as a soldier and a gentleman".

g) January 21, 1863 - A[lexander] S[wift] Pendleton, Maj[or] & A[ssistant] A[djutant] Gen[eral] at H[ea]d Q[uarte]rs 2nd Army Corps, to Captain W[arner] T[hrockmorton] Taliaferro - "impress on brigade commanders the importance of a prompt return of papers referred to company and regiment commanders"

h-k) January 21, 1863 - Four (4) handwritten copies of letter from Alexander Swift Pendleton, Major & Assistant Adjutant General at Head Quarters 2nd Army Corps, to Captain Warner Throckmorton Taliaferro - "impress on brigade commanders the importance of a prompt return of papers referred to company and regiment commanders"

l) January 26, 1863 - W[illia]m B[ooth] Taliaferro, Brig[adier] Gen[era]l com[man]d[in]g Div[isio]n at H[ea]d Q[uarte]rs Jackson's Div[isio]n 2nd Corps, to L[ieutenan]t Col[onel] Ja[me]s L. Corley, Chief Quartermaster, Army [of] Nor[thern] V[irgini]a, questions regarding assessment of damages to citizens' property - endorsed by R[obert] H[all] Chilton, A[cting] A[djutant] & I[nspector] G[eneral], dated January 29, 1863.

m) January 27, 1863 - Thomas E. Ballard at Richmond, [Virginia] to [Brigadier] Gen[era]l [William Booth Taliaferro], reports that his wound and condition are worse than first thought and will be out longer than anticipated.

n) January 29, 1863 - L[ieutenan]t D. H. Cockrill, com[man]d[in]g Pioneer Corps at Camp, Pioneer Corps, to L[ieutenan]t Oscar Hinricks, Ch[ie]f Engineer 1st Div[ision, 2nd Corps Army of Northern Virginia], note enclosing list of men who left work detail without permission and against orders.

o) [January 29, 1863] - [Lieutrnant D. H. Cockrill, com[man]d[in]g Pioneer Corps at Camp, Pioneer Corps], to 1st L[ieutenan]t Oscar Hinricks, Ch[ie]f Engineer 1st Div[ision, 2nd Corps Army of Northern Virginia], list of men who left work detail without permission and against orders.

p) February 27, 1863 - Telegraph from W[illia]m T. Joynes at Petersburg, [Virginia] to [Brigadier] Gen[eral William Booth] Taliaferro at Judge Lyons, Richmond, [Virginia], instructs Taliaferro to have his horses at the depot by 6 AM in the morning in order to ship them by rail to Wilmington, [North Carolina].

q) March 26, 1863 - W[illia]m B[ooth] Taliaferro, Brig[adier] Gen[eral] at H[ea]d Q[uarte]rs Taliaferro's Brigade, Savannah, [Georgia] to Capt[ain] G. A. Mercer, A[ssistant] A[djutant] G[eneral], forwarded Col[onel] Harrison's report regarding condition of inner defenses for Capt[ain] McCrady, Ch[ie]f Eng[inee]r's information and suggest improvements to defenses - endorsed by George A. Mercer, A[ssistant] A[djutant] G[eneral] on March 26, 1863 - endorsed by Capt[ain] John McCrady, Chief Eng[ineer], State of Georgia on May 25, 1863.

r) May 9, 1863 - Henry Bryan, Major & Ass[istan]t Insp[ecto]r Gen[era]l at Savannah, G[eorgi]a to L[ieutenan]t Col[onel] H. D. Capers, com[man]d[in]g 12th G[eorgi]a Batt[alio]n, report on Bryan's inspection of the 12th Georgia.

s) May 9, 1863 - Henry Bryan, Major & Ass[istan]t Insp[ecto]r Gen[era]l at Savannah, G[eorgi]a to L[ieutenan]t Col[onel] G. R. Black, [commanding 3rd Georgia], report on Bryan's inspection of the 3rd Georgia.

t) May 13, 1863 - W[illia]m B[ooth] Taliaferro at Head Quarters Taliaferro's Brigade near Savannah, [Georgia], to Gen[era]l S[amuel] Cooper, A[djutant] & I[nspector] G[eneral], [Richmond, Virginia] - Recommends Capt[ain] W. B. Brockett, A[ssistant] Q[uarter] M[aster] of 4th Louisiana Batt[alion] [Infantry], for promotion to Major and Brigade Quartermaster, Signed, "Wm. B. Taliaferro".

u) May 16, 1863 - Geo[rge] A. Mercer, Capt[ain] & A[ssistant] A[djutant] Gen[eral], at Head Q[uarte]rs Dist[rict of] Geo[rgia], Savannah, [Georgia] to Brig[adier] Gen[era]l W[illiam] B[ooth] Taliaferro, com[man]d[in]g &c., General Hugh W. Mercer requests Taliaferro to account for discrepancy in number of troops in Lt. Col. Pritchard's command for dates of May 2 and May 16, enclosing copy of Brig[adier] Gen[era]l Walker's report for use and return.

v) June 1, 1863 - Henry Bryan, Major & A[ssistant] Insp[ecto]r Gen[era]l, at Savannah, [Georgia] to Brig[adier] Gen[era]l Thomas Jordan, Chief of Staff, Charleston, S[outh] C[arolina], a letter accompanying four reports - endorsed by Clifton H. Jones, A[ssistant] A[djutant] G[eneral] by command of Gen[eral Pierre Gustave Toutant] Beauregard on June 3, 1863 - endorsed by Henry Bryan, Major & A[ssistant] I[nspector] Gen[era]l on June 9, 1863.

w) June 6, 1863 - W[illiam] S. Basinger, Major Com[man]d[in]g, at Headq[uarte]rs, 18th G[eorgi]a Batt[a]l[io]n, Savannah, [Georgia] to Capt[ain] W[arner] T[hrockmorton] Taliaferro, Ass[istan]t Adj[utan]t Gen[era]l, with the General's permission, moved his camp from Isle of Hope to Savannah near the City Hospital, but due to lack of transportation, had to temporarily leave his medical stores and some of the sick.

x) June 7, 1863 - W[illia]m S. Basinger, Major Com[man]d[in]g, at H[ea]dq[uarte]rs, 18th G[eorgi]a Batt[a]l[io]n, Camp Taliaferro, [Georgia] to Capt[ain] W[arner] T[hrockmorton] Taliaferro, Ass[istan]t Adj[utan]t Gen[era]l, forwards his daily report from yesterday as it was delayed by the early march and requests to send courier via Capt[ain George A.] Mercer with all communications.

y) July 3, 1863 - T. A. Burke, Act[in]g Brigade Q[uarter] M[aster] at Savannah, [Georgia] to Lieut[enan]t I. C. Cunningham, sending directions and forms for requisitioning tents.

z) October 28, 1863 - H. D. D. Twiggs, Capt[ain] & Inspect[o]r Gen[era]l, at Head Quar[ters], 7th Mil[itary] Dist[rict] to Capt[ain] P[atrick] K[ilbride] Molony, A[ssistant] A[djutant] Gen[era]l, reports on the capacity of two buildings used as store houses by Majors [T. A.] Burke and [Gerard Bull] Lartigue.
