Scope & Content General Robert Edward Lee to General Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard, February 22, 1865

Physical Appearance: The telegram is an official copy, dated February 22, 1865, on The Southern Express Company telegram form. Gen[eral] R[obert] E[dward] Lee sent the telegram from Headquarters to Gen[eral Pierre] G[ustave] T[outant] Beauregard. Lee informs Beauregard that he has directed Joseph E[ggleston] Johnston to take command of the Southern Army and that he has assigned Beauregard to assist Johnston. "[MS-890628]" is marked in pencil at the upper right corner. "1349" is marked in pencil in the left margin. A note is written in pencil below the text of the telegram and reads, "Not without your assistance by concentration -- G. T. B." [See "Official Records," XLVII, pt. 2, p. 1248.]
