Oath of Allegiance/ pass for James M. Granberry, August 18, 1862
Obverse is a Military Pass. Form is mostly pre-printed with blanks filled in with handwritten information. Along left edge is a column titled "Description" which is not filled in for No., Name, Age, Color of Hair, Color of Eyes, Height, Characteristics, and Voucher. Main body of document is a Pass which reads: "Military Pass / No. / Headquarters U.S. Forces / Columbia, Tenn, Aug. 18 1862/ Pass bearer James M. Granberry through our line at will / By Order of Gen. Negley / Chas. C. Cooke [Signature] / Provost Marshal [crossed out and (?) clerk written in].
Reverse is an "Oath of Allegiance / I solemnly swear that I will bear true allegiance to the Untied States, and support and sustain the constitution and laws thereof: that I will maintain the National sovereignty paramount to that of all State, county, or confederate powers: that I will discourage discountenance, and forever oppose Secession, Rebellion, or disintegration of the Federal union; that I disclaim nd denounce all faith and fellowship with the so-called Confederate States and confederate armies, and pledge my honor, my property and my life, to the sacred peformance of this my solemn oath of allegiance to the Government of the United States of America: so help me God. Voluntarily [handwritten] / It is understood that the violation of this oath is death. / Attest / Jas. S. Negley / Brig. Genl /Commdg / May 18th 62 / (?) [signature]"
