Physical Appearance: The telegram (official copy) is from Lee to Gen. Samuel Cooper, dated September 20, 1864. Lee is concerned about Pvt. Swittell of Co. E, 4th North Carolina State Troops and his impending execution.
"Telegram relative to Private Swittell Co. E. 4th N.C. Regiment rec'd. As I telegraphed the President some days since and to you on yesterday, the condemned is supposed to be with Genl. Early where his command is serving. Genl. Early should be directed to suspend execution and forward record. Early has been telegraphed to no record of case here."
