Scope & Content Letter from Major General Gustavus W. Smith to Brigadier General William H. C. Whiting, May 29, 1862

Physical Appearance: May 29, 1862 1hr 30m A.M. - G[ustavus] W[oodson] Smith at H[ea]d Q[uarte]rs, Harrison's [Landing, Virginia], to Brig[adier] Gen[era]l W[illiam] H. C. Whiting, Com[man]d[in]g Division, near Meadow Bridge [near Mechanicsville, Virginia] - Informs Whiting of the decision to not make the planned attack at Mechanicsville. States that Major General A[mbrose] P[owell] Hill has been ordered "to place his command on this side of the river within supporting distance of the troops guarding Meadow Bridge." Directs that this order also be sent to Hill with the request that he stay in communication with Whiting. Signed, "G. W. Smith" Maj[or] Gen[era]l. 2 pp., written in pencil.
