Scope & Content Physical Appearance: One sheet with one letter on front with four endorsements on reverse.

<> Letter: October 13, 1864 - A[mbrose] P[owell] Hill, L[ieutenan]t Gen[era]l, at H[ea]d Q[uarte]rs 3rd Corps, Petersburg, [Virginia], to Gen[era]l R[obert] E[dward] Lee - Recommends L[ieutenan]t Col[onel] G[ilbert] M[oxley] Sorrel for promotion to command Wright's Georgia Brigade. Hill is less than satisfied with present commander, Col[onel] W[illia]m Gibson, and second in command, Major Hall. (Signed) A. P. Hill, L[ieutenan]t Gen[era]l. (Signed) Gen. R. E. Lee. "Official" / "Copy" - signed "John W. Reily" Maj[or] & A[ssistant] A[djutant] G[eneral]. "A.S.S.S.O. [illegible] Nov. 4, 1864." Marks: "Copy" in top margin, written twice.

Endorsements: 1) October 15, 1864 - Approved & forwarded with much explanation. (Signed) R. E. Lee, Gen[era]l. 2) October 22, 1864 - Submitted to Sec[retary of] War. Recommendations consideration of Lee's opinion. (Signed) S. Cooper, A[djutant] & I[nspector] G[eneral]. 3) October 24, 1864 - Submitted to the President for his approval. (Signed) J. A. Seddon, Sec[re]t[ar]y [of] War. 4) October 27, 1864 - Approved for temporary rank appointment. Asks of whereabouts of General Wright. (Signed) J. D. A narrow strip of paper has been attached to the right edge of the letter. The following notation is written on the back, "Gen. Sorrel endorsed for promotion by Gen's R. E. Lee, A. P. Hill, S. Cooper, & J. S.[sic] Seddon."
