CML-MSC.49b. December 28, 1861 - Letter from R[ichard] M[ontgomery] Gano at Austin, Texas, to General Hebert - Reintroduces himself and makes a brief recommendation for his friend McDonnell from the Grimes Company. "Signed" R. M. Gano. A typed transcript is also available. (2 pp.)

CML-MSC.49c. November 6, 1862 - R[ichard] M[ontgomery] Gano, at Gallatin, Tenn., to Gen[eral] Breckinridge - Requests an 8-week leave of absence to take his 2 original companies home with him and recruit. States that Lieutenant Colonel Huffman and Major Theo[philus] Steele will command the remaining companies. Notes that General Morgan consents to the plan. "Signed" R. M. Gano, Col[onel] reg[imen]t Morgan's Brigade. CSA. A note from Major Theodore Steele in the left margin gives approval to the plan. "Signed" Theo. Steele, Major, Gano's Regiment. March 3, 1863 - Letter from R[ichard] M[ontgomery] Gano to Gen[era]l Breckinridge - Expresses regrets at not seeing him and states that General Buckner would prefer a command in the field as a Brigadier than at a post as a Major General. CML-MSC.49e. April 7, 1863 - Surgeon's certificate stating that Col[onel] R[ichard] M[ontgomery] Gano, Com[man]d[in]g 2nd Brigade, Morgan's Division of Cavalry is unfit for active service due to "organic disease of the heart." Recommends that he be relieved of service. "Signed" B. Marshall, Chief Surgeon, 2nd Brigade, Morgan's Division, Wheeler's Corps. "Approved:" T. W. Allen, S[enio]r Surgeon, Morgan's Brigade. CML-MSC.49f. [n. d., ca. April 1863] - Surgeon's certificate stating that Colonel R[ichard] M[ontgomery] Gano Com[man]d[in]g 2nd Brigade, Brig[adier] Gen[eral] J. H. Morgan's Division of Cavalry, is unfit for "duties of a soldier" due to "hypertrophy & valvular disease of the heart" - "symptoms of which are aggravated by exercise and mantal emotion." Recommends Gano be transferred to a position where he can lead a "quiet & uniform life." "Signed" D. W. Yandell, Surg[eon] & Med[ical] Dir[ector] Hardee's Corps. A typed transcript is also available. CML-MSC.49g. April 8, 1863 - H[ea]d Q[uarte]rs 2nd Brig[ade] Morgan's Div[ision], Rock Island, Tenn[essee] - R[ichard] M[ontgomery] Gano, to Col[onel] G. W. Brent, A[ssistant] A[djutant] G[eneral] & Chief of Staff, A[rmy of] T[ennessee] - Requests a transfer to duty to Brandon, Miss[issippi] or another interior post, due to his health. Suggests Brandon as he has family there. "Signed" R. M. Gano, Col[onel] Com[man]d[in]g, 2nd Brigade, Morgan's Div[ision]. A typed transcript is available. Mentions that Gano initially submitted his resignation but Morgans feels he is too valuable to be lost to service. Advised him to make this application and recommends for promotion. "Signed" John H. Morgan, Brig[adier] Gen[era]l. 2) April 15, 1863 - Headquarters Cavalry Corps - Forwarded. Endorses Morgan's recommendation. Referred by adjutant of General Bragg to Col[onel] Ewell. Transfer not approved but L[ieutenan]t Gen[era]l [Edmund] Kirby Smith has requested Gano's services in Texas. "Signed" W. W. Mackall, Chief of Staff. A typed transcript is available. CML-MSC.49h. September 21, 1863 - Letter from R[ichard] M[ontgomery] Gano, at Dallas, Texas, to Capt[ain] Ed P. Turner, A[ssistant] A[djutant] G[eneral] - Advises that he had left Milican with orders for Bonham, but before reaching Dallas, discovered he was ordered back to Milican. Notes that he has been ill with flux for 3 days and should be able to leave for Milican, getting there by evening of September 26. "Signed" R. M. Gano, Brig[adier] Gen[eral] Com[man]d[in]g. CML-MSC.49i. [n. d.] - R[ichard] M[ontgomery] Gano to Capt[ain] Ed P. Turner, A[ssistant] A[djutant] G[eneral], Department of Texas, Arizona, &c. - Sends list of his staff officers, ordered to report from Tennessee. Requests a qualified officer to be Inspector. November 3, 1863 - (Copy) Letter from E[dmund] Kirby Smith, at H[ea]d Q[uarte]rs Dep[artmen]t of Trans-Miss[issippi], Shreveport, L[ouisian]a, to His Excellency, Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederate States of America, Richmond, [Virginia] - Recommends "spontaneous" promotions for Col[onel] R[ichard] M[ontgomery] Gano and Col[onel] J. CML-MSC.49l. December 5, 1864 - Head Quarters, Dist[rict] Indian Terr[itor]y, Trans-Miss[issippi] Dep[artmen]t, Fort Towson - Letter from S. B. Maxey, to Hon[orable] James A. Seddon, Sec[retar]y of War, [Richmond, Virginia] - Submits a glowing recommendation for Col[onel] R[ichard] M[ontgomery] Gano's promotion to Brigadier. CML-MSC.49m. December 21, 1864 - Letter from R[ichard] M[ontgomery] Gano at Shreveport, L[ousian]a, to Senator L. T. Wigfall, of Texas - Encloses official documents concerning his appointment to Brigadier in the Provisional Army. Requests the senator's assistance in getting his commission in the army, especially to date from October 15, 1863. "Signed" R. M. Gano, Com[man]d[in]g Texas Brig[ade] Cavalry, Indian District. CML-MSC.49n. December 22, 1864 - Letter from R[ichard] M[ontgomery] Gano, at Shreveport, L[ouisian]a, to Hon[orable] Jno. [John] R. Baylor, M[ember of] C[ongress] - Encloses letter from Lieutenant General Edmund Kirby Smith to President Davis. Concerns the delay in his appointment to Brigadier in the Provisional Army. "Signed" R. CML-MSC.49o. December 23, 1864 - Letter from E[dmund] Kirby Smith, at H[ea]d Q[uarte]rs Trans-Miss[issippi] Dep[artmen]t, Shreveport, [Louisiana], to Hon[orable] L. T. Wigfall - States that he has forwarded a communication to the Adjutantant & Inspector General's Office, a recommendation for Col[onel] R[ichard] M[ontgomery] Gano's promotion to Brigadier.
