Scope & Content Purchases for Brigadier General George H. Steuart's Mess, 1863-1864

Physical Appearance: Four purchase accounts for Steuart's mess: a) January 30, 1864 - Purchases for [Brigadier] Gen[era]l Geo[rge] H[ume] Steuart by H. F. Propst - List contains turkeys, ducks, chickens, potatoes, butter, molasses totalling amount of $59. Marks: "S-88 Metal Case 3 776 / S-/ 31-3" at top near upper right corner. <<>> Receipt to Capt[ain] [George] Williamson for $59 in payment for items. Signed, "H. F. Propst" Jan. 30th 1864. b) November 1-27, [1863?] - [Purchase Account of Brigadier] Gen[era]l Geo[rge] H[ume] Steuart & Mess, To I[gnatius] Caulfield, A[ssistant] C[ommissary of] S[ubsistence] - List contains flour, beef, bacon, salt, potatoes, rice, candles, hard bread, and vinegar, subtotal amount of $189.79, less Mr. Wilson's rations amount of $18.13 = total amount due $171.66. Unsigned. Marks: "S-21-4" at top of page. 1 page. <<>> Marks: "Metal Case 3 S 88" c) December 1-31, [1863] - [Purchase Account of Brigadier] Gen[era]l Geo[rge] H[ume] Steuart & Mess, To I[gnatius] Caulfield, Capt[ain] & A[ssistant] C[ommissary of] S[ubsistence] - List contains flour, fresh beef, bacon, salt pork, salt, potatoes, candles, hard bread, soap, subtotal amount of $340.44, less Mr. Wilson's rations, amount $19.80 = total amount due $320.64. "Paid Jan[uar]y 6, 1864 / I. Caulfield / Capt. & ACS." written across several lines of bill. Marks: "S-21-5 / S - 776 Metal Case / 3" near upper right corner. 1 page. d) [n. d.] - [Purchase Account of Brigadier] Gen[era]l Geo[rge] H[ume] Steuart & Mess, To I[gnatius] Caulfied, Capt[ain] & A[ssistant] C[ommissary of] S[ubsistence] - List contains flour, fresh beef, bacon, salt, rice, candles, salt pork, soap, lard, salt beef, corn meal, molasses, and vinegar, subtotal amount of $189.57, less Mr. Wilson's rations, amount $16.62 = total amount due $172.95. Marks: "S-21-6 / S Metal / Case 3 / S-776" at upper right corner.
Archival History The receipt and accounts of purchases for Brig. Gen. Steuart's mess were formerly located in the MC 3 S-776 files. The receipt dated January 30, [1864] is listed in Douglas S. Freeman's "Calendar of Confederate Papers," number S-31-3, on page 405. The three accounts for his mess are listed together in Freeman's "Calendar," number S-21-4-6, on page 406.
