|Archival History||James Power Smith was born in Athens, Ohio on July 4, 1837. He attended Jefferson College and Hampden-Sydney College. When the war started, he enlisted as a Corporal in the Rockbridge Artillery (Virginia). He subsequently served as staff officer to different generals during the war: September 2, 1862 - Lt. and ADC to Gen. T. J. Jackson; June 8, 1863 - Lt. and ADC to Gen. R. S. Ewell; December 7, 1863 - Capt. & AAIG to Gen. Battle; December 23, 1864 - Capt. & AAIG to Gen.Wharton (serving that capacity since July 1864); 1865 - Capt. & AAIG to Gen. Echols. Postwar he served as a preacher in Roanoke, Fredericksburg, and Richmond, Virginia. Smith died on August 6, 1923 in Greensboro, North Carolina. He was buried in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, Virginia.|
