Physical Appearance: James Power Smith wrote the letter dated, July 3, 1907, as a verification of a letter written by Gen. Robert E. Lee to Lt. Gen. T. J. Jackson dated December 13, 1862.

Archival History James Power Smith was born in Athens, Ohio on July 4, 1837. He attended Jefferson College and Hampden-Sydney College. When the war started, he enlisted as a Corporal in the Rockbridge Artillery (Virginia). He subsequently served as staff officer to different generals during the war: September 2, 1862 - Lt. and ADC to Gen. T. J. Jackson; June 8, 1863 - Lt. and ADC to Gen. R. S. Ewell; December 7, 1863 - Capt. & AAIG to Gen. Battle; December 23, 1864 - Capt. & AAIG to Gen.Wharton (serving that capacity since July 1864); 1865 - Capt. & AAIG to Gen. Echols. Postwar he served as a preacher in Roanoke, Fredericksburg, and Richmond, Virginia. Smith died on August 6, 1923 in Greensboro, North Carolina. He was buried in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, Virginia.
