Scope & Content William Booth Taliaferro Papers: Circulars, 1862 & 1864-1865

Physical Appearance: This folder of the William Booth Taliaferro Papers contains the following nineteen circulars from 1862 & 1864 - 1865:

a) July 21, 1862 - By order Brig[adier] Gen[era]l W[illiam] B[ooth] Taliaferro, R[ichard] K[idder] Meade, Act[ing] A[ssistant] A[djutant] General at H[ea]d Q[uarte]rs 3rd Brig[ade] A[rmy of the] V[alley] to "The commanders of the 10th, 23rd, & 37th V[irgini]a Vol[unteer]s, requests complete list of officers and men taken prisoner from the evening after the battle at Carrick's Ford to the present day and orders an inspection for the next morning.
b) October 2, 1862 - By command of Maj[or] Gen[era]l [Thomas Jonathan] Jackson, E[lisha] F[ranklin] Paxton, A[cting] A[ssistant] A[djutant] Gen[era]l, at H[ea]d Q[uarte]rs, V[alley] Dist[rict], to Col[onel] A[ndrew] J[ackson] Grigsby, directs division commanders to submit an estimate of trenching required and then directs them to place them in the ammunition wagons upon receipt.

c) October 30, 1862 - By order of Maj[or] Gen[eral Thomas Jonathan] Jackson, A[lexander] S[wift] Pendleton, A[ssistant] A[djutant] Gen[eral] at H[ea]d Q[uarte]rs V[alley] D[istrict], to Division Commanders, directs prompt return of "Monthly Return" forms and brigades to be named according to their commanders.

d) December 29, 1864 - By order of Maj[or] Gen[era]l Sam Jones, Cha[rle]s S. Stringfellow, A[ssistant] A[djutant] Gen[era]l, at H[ea]d Q[uarte]rs Dist[rict of] So[uth] Ca[rolina], Charleston, [South Carolina], to Commanding Officers (Brig[adier] Gen[era]l W[illiam] B[ooth] Taliaferro), directs them to ensure prompt return of Monthly Returns for December 31st with specific details.

e) February 22, 1865 - By command [of] Brig[adier] General [William Booth] Taliaferro, P[eyton] N[elson] Page, A[ssistant] A[djutant] G[eneral] at Head Quar[ters] Taliaferro's Division in the Field, to Col[onel Alfred] Rhett, Col[onel] Anderson, [&] Brig[adier] Gen[eral Stephen] Elliott, directs that all extra wagons and teams be turned over to Major McMicken, Quartermaster, upon reaching the other side of the Santee River.

f) February 28, 1865 - By command [of] Brig[adier] Gen[era]l [William Booth] Taliaferro, P[eyton] N[elson] Page, A[ssistant] A[djutant] Gen[era]l, at Head Quarters Taliaferro's Div[isio]n, Cheraw, S[outh] C[arolina], to Brig[adier] Gen[era]l [Stephen] Elliott, Col[onel] A[lfred] Rhett, and Col[onel] Anderson, requests a list of officers who have not purchased cloth in the last twelve months.

g) February 28, 1865 - By command of Brig[adier] Gen[era]l [William Booth] Taliaferro, P[eyton] N[elson] Page, A[ssistant] A[djutant] G[eneral] at H[ea]d Q[uarte]rs Taliaferro's Division, to Brig[adier] Gen[era]l [Stephen] Elliott, Col[onel Alfred] Rhett, [and] Col[onel] Anderson, orders that all baggage and cooking utensils be sent across the river immediately to Harrington's and that three days' rations be issued to the men.

h) March 25, 1865 - By command of Brig[adier] Gen[era]l [William Booth Taliaferro], [William] Perrin Kemp, A[ide] D[e] C[amp] at H[ea]d Q[uarte]rs Taliaferro's Division, to Col[onel] Butler, L[ieutenan]t Col[onel] Brown, Maj[or] Rhett, Capt[ain] Mordecai, [and] Capt[ain] Seabrook, requests the number of wagons and "how they are employed".

i) March 26, 1865 - By command of Brig[adier] Gen[era]l [William Booth] Taliaferro, [William] Perrin Kemp, A[ide] D[e] C[amp] at H[ea]d Q[uarte]rs Taliaferro's Division, to Col[onel] Butler, L[ieutenan]t Col[onel] Brown, Maj[or] Rhett, requests a return of all Federal POWs taken on March 19, 20, & 21 "to these H[ea]d Q[uarte]rs."

j) March 27, 1865 - By command of Brig[adier] Gen[era]l [William Booth] Taliaferro, [William] Perrin Kemp, A[cting] Assistant Adjutant-General, at Headquarters, Taliaferro's Division near Smithfield, N[orth] C[arolina] to Col[onel] Butler, L[ieutenan]t Col[onel] Brown, [&] Maj[or] Rhett, requests a list of barefoot men and those men whose shoes will not last a three-days march.

k) March 27, 1865 - By command of Brig[adier] Gen[era]l [William Booth] Taliaferro, [William] Perrin Kemp, A[ide] D[e] C[amp] at H[ea]d Q[uarte]rs Taliaferro's Division, to Col[onel] Butler, L[ieutenan]t Col[onel] Brown, [&] Maj[or] Rhett, directs that all commanding officers properly police their camps, removing "all filth and garbage […] [and] that sinks are of the proper depth and that the men are made to use them." All brigade commanders will be held "to strict accountability for any failure to comply[.]"

l) March 28, 1865 - By command of Brig[adier] Gen[era]l [William Booth] Taliaferro, [William] Perrin Kemp, A[ide] D[e] C[amp] at H[ea]d Q[uarte]rs Taliaferro's Division Near Smithfield, N[orth] C[arolina], [to Col[onel] Butler, L[ieutenan]t Col[onel] Brown, Maj[or] Rhett, Capt[ain] Mordecai, Capt[ain] Seabrook, [&] Capt[ain] Coalfield], directs that a cooks and infirmary corps be organized per General Order No. 3, returns all detailed men except for those allowed by General Order No. 3 to their units, and returns all couriers from Brigade Headquarters to their units.
m) March 28, 1865 - cover for Circular dated March 28, 1865 in (l) above;

n) March 28, 1865 - By command of Brig[adier] Gen[era]l [William Booth] Taliaferro, [William Perrin Kemp], A[ide] D[e] C[amp] at H[ea]d Q[uarte]rs Taliaferro's Division, to Col[onel] Butler, L[ieutenan]t Col[onel] Brown, [&] Maj[or] Rhett, request for number of blank forms for Muster Rolls, Muser & Pay Rolls, Muster & Pay Rolls for Field, Staff & Band, Inspection, etc. needed by the commands.

o) March 28, 1865 - By command of of Brig[adier] Gen[era]l [William Booth], [William] Perrin Kemp, A[ide] D[e] C[amp] at H[ea]d Q[uarte]rs Taliaferro's Division, to Col[onel] Butler [&] L[ieutenan]t Col[onel] Brown, requests the number of unarmed men in each command.

p) March 28, 1865 - By command of Brig[adier] Gen[era]l [William Booth] Taliaferro, R. W. Memminger, A[ssistant] A[djutant] G[eneral] at H[ea]d Q[uarte]rs Taliaferro's Division, to Col[onel] Butler, L[ieutenan]t Col[onel] Brown, [&] Maj[or] Rhett, instructs five roll calls be made per day at irregular intervals, in order to prevent straggling.

q) March 29, 1865 - By command of Brig[adier] Gen[era]l [William Booth] Taliaferro, R. W. Memminger, A[ssistant] A[djutant] G[eneral], at H[ea]d Q[uarte]rs Taliaferro's Division, to Col[onel] Butler, L[ieutenan]t Col[onel] Brown, [&] Maj[or] Rhett, orders a strict guard be kept around the camps and patrols made during the day and night.

r) March 29, 1865 - By order of Brig[adier] Gen[era]l [William Booth] Taliaferro, R. W. Memminger, A[ssistant] A[djutant] G[eneral] at H[ea]d Q[uarte]rs Taliaferro's Div[ision], to Brigade Commanders, notification that Surgeon's Certificates of disability are necessary for retaining clerks in departmental headquarters.

s) March 30, 1865 - By order of Col[onel] Butler, R. W. Memminger, A[ssistant] A[djutant] G[eneral], at H[ea]d Q[uarte]rs Taliaferro's Division, to L[ieutenan]t Col[onel] Brown [&] L[ieutenan]t Col[onel] [Joseph Atkinson?] Yates, no unauthorized firing of guns by the men.
