Physical Appearance: March 17, 1865 - General Joseph Eggleston Johnston at Smithfield, [North Carolina], to General Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard - States enemy attacked Lieutenant General William J. Hardee yesterday, five miles south of Averasboro, repulsed each time. Estimates Hardee's loss at 400-500 with enemy POW estimate of 3,300. Requests Beauregard hurry General Stephen Dill Lee along and to have the commanding officer at Salisbury send transportation and artillery horses along the railroads. (Signed) J. E. Johnston.
