Scope & Content Lieutenant General Leonidas Polk to Brigadier General William Mackall, April 20, 1863

Physical Appearance: April 20, 1863 - L[eonidas] Polk at Head Quarters, Polk's Corps, to Brig[adier] Gen[era]l [William] Mackall, Chief of Staff - Submits the following names from his troops as requested to be inscribed upon the guns of Maury's brigade: Col[onel] H. L. W. Bratton, 24th Tennessee Vol[unteer]s, killed at Murfreesboro on December 31; Color Bearer L. T. Mitchell, 1st Tennessee Vol[unteer]s, killed at Perryville on October 8; L[ieutenan]t Col[onel] M. E. Morgan, 13th Tennessee Vol[unteer]s, killed at Murfreesboro on December 31; and Col[onel] W[illia]m L. Moore, 8th Tennessee Vol[unteer]s, killed at Murfreesboro on December 31. Signed, "L. Polk" Lieut[enant] Gen[era]l Com[mandin]g. 1 page. <<> 3 Endorsements: 1) April 22, 1863 - H[ea]d Q[uarte]rs Army of Tenn[essee] - Referred to Col[onel] Oladowski, Chief of Ordnance. Signed, "W. W. Mackall" Chief of Staff. 2) April 23, 1863 - Ordn[ance] Office, Tullahoma, [Tennessee] - states that the names are chosen by their commanders and put on at pleasure. Signed, "F. Oladowski" 3) April 23, 1863 - H[ea]d Q[uarte]rs Army of Tenn[essee] - Respectfully returned to L[ieutenan]t Gen[era]l Polk, who will have names engraved on the guns.
